Been working on the axel block today, partly strengthening as the weight of breach block was clearly putting some strain on it, but also this is where the elevating and traverse wheels will be attached sticking out the back. Managed to get a working traverse system installed by butchering an old focus workbench (talk about jerry built :slap: ) gives a traverse of about 30 degrees pretty much the same as a real one :D

If you like the mountain gun in his Living Room, you'll f*cking love the Railway Gun in his garage.

The level of skill and commitment to this hobby that some of you have never ceases to amaze me. Well done.

Either TLSFX 2 stage mortar rounds or the TAG inovations shell system, still to decide.

Progress this week, the wheels have a coat of paint, finished the axle block (paint still wet :slap: ), Nearly finished the trunion block just needs latches to hold the trunion in place. Of course these are in no way accurate but rather a practical way of mounting the gun that hopefully looks period enough. Need lathe wheels for the elevation and traverse mechanism's. Must try to discipline myself to finish the other trail spoke rather than moving onto something more interesting (like the dummy rangefinder which I have started).-- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available --

That's looking better all the time , what sort of elevation is it going to have ?

Elevating the gun has always been the thorn in my side with this project as frankly I am no engineer and lack the ability to do it properly. So I came up with the rather crude idea of having the other workbench winder pull back on a bracket that slides through a slot in the recoil block. the slot is cut at an angle so that as the bracket is wound back it pulls down on the back of the recoil block. This produces about 40 degrees of elevation, far less than the real gun would have but I am hoping it is sufficient for airsoft purposes. I was looking at the elevating mechanism on a repro Nebelwefer that GD had at a show, this was all properly engineered and completly beyond my abilities so if my idea does not work in practice I will have to call in help from a clever lad I know that runs a small engineering company locally.

The other problem is that the main gun section sits so high on the trunion block and when elevated overhangs the back of the axle so much that it puts a huge weight at the rear of the axle. But at least that is something I am confident I can sort out myself with playing around with the trail fixing arrangement to take the strain and keep the axle block level.

40 degrees should be OK , we don't often play in real mountain's where you might need more than that

Finished the right hand trail leg this week and modified the fixings to the axle block so it can better take the weight of breech block. Next week will be playing around with the elevating mechanism and mounting the recoil and breach blocks :good:-- attachment is not available ---- attachment is not available --

Finally finished playing with the elevating mechanism. The problem i had with the pull down at the back system was you had to take some of the weight of the front of the gun by placing your hand on the back of the breach block untill you had it elevated about half way then it would wind ok. I had always intended to put a dummy crank arm at the front to make it look like that was what was elevating the gun but now I have the crank wired to the winding mechanism with catenary wire so that it lifts thefront as it pulls down at the back. There is no gearing mechanism so you are winding the weight of the gun block but it seems to work ok. phew glad that jobs done.

Now to make a more secure fixing for the trunion block to take the gun blocks weight while still allowing it to traverse, repair the damage done by redoing things to make the elevating mechanism work and then next week I can start on the gunsheild :D
